Peter Bilello, President & CEO, CIMdata [Bio]
As PLM professionals, we must continually look to enhance the value resulting from the digitalization of our organization’s end-to-end product lifecycle. To do so requires keeping an eye on the evolving trends and enablers of digital transformation. A brief review of CIMdata’s Critical Dozen trends and enablers of successful digital transformation will be presented, along with a review of the criticality of organizational change management’s role in maximizing value delivery. Emphasis will be placed on why these topics are critical value driver prerequisites. Additional discussion will emphasize recent developments in the PLM solution space, such as AI adoption, that enhance the value that can be realized from investment in digitalization and evolving customer demands and/or market opportunities that are motivating investment in digitalization of the product lifecycle. Industry examples will be shared throughout the presentation.
  4. 9:20 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. | KEYNOTE: Design for Sustainability: Leveraging Design Engineering within an Optimization Culture
David P. Genter, Director, Systems Design Engineering, Accelera by Cummins, Inc. [Bio]
To produce new, more sustainable products, Design Engineering must be more fully leveraged, given its foundational impact on a product’s environmental footprint. While Design Engineering has long performed many “Design for X” (e.g., Design for Serviceability, Design for Manufacturability) initiatives, now another must be added to their responsibilities – Design for Sustainability (DfS), taking advantage of recent analytical tool developments enabling designs to be optimized without ever leaving the CAD environment. At Cummins, we have demonstrated that when personnel are dedicated to performing this type of design optimization, products not only have lower lifecycle CO2 intensity but also have significantly lower costs, paying back the fully burdened Engineering salary more than five times over in the first year, and continuing to deliver such savings in subsequent years. Other benefits include improving the ability to design right the first time, improving lifecycle profitability, and enhanced product performance. This presentation will show how Cummins has made DfS a practical part of their design process and culture, enabling their Design Engineering workforce to impact climate change while efficiently designing better products.

  8. 10:50 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. | A Strategy for the Management of Large Enterprise PLM Platforms
Jorgen Dahl, Sr Director, PLM, GE Aerospace [Bio]
The management of large Enterprise PLM Platforms can be a complex and challenging undertaking. Priorities have to be weighed to ensure the existing system works to its full capability while delivering technology modernization and future capabilities. Operational stability and usability are the two most critical aspects of any Enterprise PLM system. Assuming we have a functioning and sustained system, we next must focus on ensuring cybersecurity and controlled access to the data. At the same time, we have to zealously drive platform technology improvements to take advantage of virtualized infrastructure automation capabilities and stay ahead of PLM vendor obsolescence changes to meet the needs of business transformation and deliver new digital thread capabilities across the enterprise. As stewards of our platform solutions, we must drive strategic and proactive technology and process improvements to allow the business to scale and grow. This presentation will outline a strategy for developing Enterprise PLM Platform and management processes. It will talk about the initiatives and management systems that must exist and how each underlying platform technology advancement directly addresses business capability development needs while at the same time putting operational stability and usability front and center.
  9. 11:20 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. | Applying Digital Thread in Commercial Aviation: The Digital Authorized Release Certificate
Dr. Robert Rencher, Sr. Systems Engineer, Associate Technical Fellow, The Boeing Company (speaking on behalf of the A&D PLM Action Group) [Bio]
This presentation will discuss the commercial aviation success of incorporating digital thread in conjunction with the Authorized Release Certificate (ARC) regulatory requirement. Why is this important? Historically, the regulatory requirement of providing part lifecycle traceability was accomplished with paper documentation. The cost of compliance has been substantial and error-prone. Digitizing the documentation provided the ability to quickly search and find the supporting documentation. Using digital thread combined with distributed ledger technology has proven a successful digital solution. The digital thread has addressed the digitization, traceability, provenance, and accessibility of part data across the product lifecycle from design to final disposition. The concept and constructs of the digital thread introduced change to the business processes, system definitions, and technology used in support of the regulation. The ARC ecosystem’s use of digital thread demonstrated A&D ecosystem interoperability. In addition to looking at the incorporation of digital thread in conjunction with the ARC regulatory requirement, the presentation will update the AD PAG’s Digital Thread Benchmark, emergent digital thread patterns, and an A&D industry digital thread standards alignment strategy.
  10. 11:50 a.m. – 12:20 p.m. | Revolutionizing Product Definition: How mabe Transformed Efficiency with Modularization and Digitalization
Gabriel Vargas, Director Engineering Services, mabe
Maria Elena “Mary” Mata Lopez, Technical Information & Modular Architecture Leader,  mabe [Bio]
mabe, an appliances and white goods manufacturer, was challenged in their product definition. They were unable to find the resources they needed to manage their catalog of products, SKUs (Stock Keeping Units). Even if resources were available, they would most likely not be able to afford to staff up. mabe also had to reduce the lead time for new product introductions to stay competitive. Something drastic had to be done! mabe had to improve efficiency in its product definition operation to significantly reduce the resources needed to introduce new products, maintain the existing ones, and shorten the overall lead time. mabe turned to modularization as the way to build efficient systems allowing them to derive product configurations to populate their product catalog instead of designing products one-by-one. As a result, information was now well structured and systemized, described by a unified product information model. This enabled the integration of the IT landscape, automating the process from portfolio planning to engineering BOM creation and manufacturing BOM and routing. Through digitalization and automation and a modular way of working mabe reduced the resources for New Product Introduction by 90% and Product Maintenance by 80% while reducing lead time from 1 month to 1 day for new SKUs.

Today’s products collect enormous amounts of measurements of a product’s usage in near real-time. Sensors and onboard computing are within the solution domain of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) and continue to benefit from Moore’s Law. Surely, these data insights can lead to safer products. Companies developing complex mobility products containing more embedded software face increasing pressures for safety innovations. This evolution is often identified as the Software Defined Vehicle (SDV). Contextual data, which is easy to comprehend, is one key to success, pushing PLM and ALM solutions towards a systems focal point of applied knowledge and best practices during mobility product lifecycles. In this presentation, we will explore the reasons why it is more important than ever that ALM, EDA, and PLM cooperate to enable re-engineering and inventing streamlined processes and data flow across mobility product lifecycles. We will discuss the necessity and challenge of data sharing and knowledge exchanges across products. Data discovery between products and the environment within which they operate requires a higher level of integration to achieve on-going safe operations. The safest products learn as they discover insights via their experiential data.

The concept of a Digital Thread is not easy to grasp, and it is impossible to find a single person in a company with the whole picture and overall responsibility. The total product life cycle in the extended enterprise is a challenge with a large scope. In getting a team to focus on the same goal, a story, a narrative, or a map is useful. The good news is that such a map exists, and it is powerful as it is about the life cycle and not domain-specific. And even better, it is a standard. This presentation will showcase how a standard such as PLCS delivers a solid foundation for educating and spreading knowledge and facilitating communication between people. Some hands-on examples of a pragmatic approach to the digitalization transformation process will be shared.
  18. 3:20 p.m. – 3:50 p.m. | Moving Beyond 3D PDFs: Envisioning AI-Powered, Data-Driven Product Lifecycle Management
