Glumac Receives Revit BIM Experience Award for Use of BIM for Sustainable Design

Autodesk, Inc. today announced that Glumac, a leading mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) consulting engineering firm, has received a Revit BIM Experience Award for its exemplary use of building information modeling (BIM) and dedication to sustainable design. To efficiently collaborate with multi-discipline teams working on large-scale projects, Glumac's engineers use Revit MEP software to share Revit models with project partners, fostering tighter integration and communication. The Revit BIM Experience Award honors commercial firms, educational institutions or individuals for the use of the Revit platform to create complex designs, collaborate across multiple disciplines and drive increased productivity and sustainability in the building design process.

"In 2006, our firm conducted formal research, asking clients and reviewing software applications, to find the best BIM software and determined that Revit MEP was the right design program for our firm's needs," said Steve Straus, president of Glumac's Portland, OR office. "The benefits of using Revit MEP for this multi-discipline project have been impressive. By using Revit MEP, our engineers created a 3D model of the entire project to better understand, visualize and analyze the systems they're designing and, equally important, the relationship of those systems within other building disciplines."

Glumac first implemented Revit MEP for use on the Providence Portland Medical Center project, which is projected for completion in 2007. In addition to the cancer treatment and research facility and 9,000 square foot Vivarium, the mechanical area for this complex facility will take up almost an entire floor of the hospital. Although the MEP system was originally designed using Glumac's existing CAD-based processes, the firm leveraged this project to investigate their use of Revit MEP, BIM for MEP Engineering, to create a building information model of the entire mechanical floor of the hospital. During the construction phase, Glumac used the Revit model to facilitate easy communication with the owner, architect, and the various contractors working on the project.

Glumac recently used Revit MEP software to collaborate with Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects and structural engineering firm KPFF on a mixed-use, 23-story building in Portland, Oregon. The goal for the building (comprised of a two-story retail space, four stories of office space, 17 stories of residential apartments and five-stories of underground parking) was to attain a LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for the overall project and LEED Commercial Interiors (CI) Platinum for the office space. Although this complex project presented the team with design challenges, by sharing their building information models across the Revit platform, they were able to easily identify and solve issues that are often not discovered until the construction phase.

"Glumac's leadership role in the use of BIM for sustainable design serves as an example for its industry peers, and is well-deserving of this award," said Jay Bhatt, senior vice president, Autodesk AEC Solutions. "It is through such increased integration and innovation that we can move towards a more sustainable future."

Glumac recently acquired the services of PPI Group to provide future training in Revit MEP and IES analysis software across eight offices.

About the Revit BIM Experience Award

The Revit BIM Experience Award celebrates building industry professionals and educators around the world who are helping to drive transformation of the building industry through building information modeling. Autodesk honors Glumac with this award for innovation and excellence in implementing the Revit platform for building information modeling including Revit Architecture, Revit Structure and Revit MEP software on one or more projects.
