Thornton Tomasetti Receives Revit BIM Experience Award for Collaborative Use of Building Information Modeling

Autodesk, Inc . announced that it has presented Thornton Tomasetti, an international engineering and design firm based in New York, with a Revit BIM Experience Award for their use of Revit Structure. Thorton Tomasetti is using Revit Structure to coordinate structural design and analysis, and to collaborate with other design disciplines using the Revit platform for building information modeling (BIM). This has helped the firm save time and increase accuracy on projects requiring fast-track schedules, and to foster tighter collaboration in multidisciplinary teams. The Revit BIM Experience Award honors organizations, including commercial architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) firms, educational institutions, and individuals for their innovation and excellence in implementing the Revit platform for BIM. Candidates are judged on their ability to create quality and complex designs, collaborate across the building design disciplines, and drive increased productivity in the building design process.

"Revit Structure is built specifically for our particular type of work and no other software package has been able to offer us the same level of capabilities," said Ken Murphy, BIM Manager at Thornton Tomasetti. "With Revit, we are able to create production BIM models straight out of the box, making our projects more communicable to clients, and the interoperability gains we've seen while using Revit have made our projects more efficient and vastly improved our business."

A cutting-edge engineering and design firm based in New York City, Thornton Tomasetti worked with Microsol Resources Corporation to implement Revit Structure in 2004 and has since successfully used it on several large, complex projects. Revit Structure is specifically developed for structural engineers and operates between analysis and design models and the actual model production software, which has enabled cross-discipline integration, significantly improved coordination, eliminated duplicate modeling efforts on projects and improved the quality of the deliverables.

One of Thornton Tomasetti's current projects is a 2.2 million square-foot sports stadium in the United Sates with seating capacity for over 80,000 spectators and approximately 200 suites. Though this is a challenging project due to its sheer size and high level of complexity, the design process has been easily executed with Revit Structure. It has allowed Thornton Tomasetti's project team to easily remain on a fast-track timeframe and provided instant benefits such as the ability to see changes in any view of the model and the use of parameters to capture and communicate design intent. Thornton Tomasetti has also utilized Revit Structure for the 750,000 square foot Mohawk Casino in Monticello, New York. Designers re-used existing analysis models to quickly create the Revit model and schematic drawings for this project. The project's structural elements, including sloping roofs and multi-level areas, were all modeled easily and accurately and were represented on drawing sheets flawlessly.

"By using Revit Structure and coordinating closely with multidisciplinary partners also using the Revit BIM platform, Thornton Tomasetti is setting an example for the AEC industry of true integrated practice," said Jay Bhatt, senior vice president, Autodesk AEC Solutions. "We are pleased to present Thornton Tomasetti with the Revit BIM Experience Award for pushing the boundaries of BIM to create better buildings and deliver greater client value."

The Revit BIM Experience Award celebrates building industry professionals and educators around the world who are helping to drive transformation of the building industry through building information modeling. Autodesk honors firms with this award for innovation and excellence in implementing the Autodesk Revit platform for building information modeling, including Revit Architecture, Revit Structure and Revit MEP on one or more projects.
