NEC Personal Products DMS Division Realizes Savings In New Product Development With Windchill®

PTC announced that NEC Personal Products Business Appliances DMS Division has succeeded in improving efficiency with the implementation of an integral Windchill PDMLink® 8.0 and Windchill ProjectLinkT 8.0 system. NEC Personal Products develops electronics devices for specific customers and has been a long-time user of PTC solutions beginning with the company's implementation of Pro/ENGINEER® integrated advanced CAD/CAM/CAE solution in 1990.

NEC Personal Products Business Appliances DMS Division first implemented Windchill as a design/development project management tool in 2000. Using Windchill, DMS Division has standardized design documents at both product development and manufacturing sites, is able to more effectively share design and change management information, and has improved collaboration with suppliers.

DMS Division upgraded to Windchill PDMLink 8.0 and Windchill ProjectLink 8.0 in June 2006 as part of a larger initiative to update their technology infrastructure. The key reason for the upgrade was to take advantage of new product features that replaced hard-to-maintain customizations from prior implementations. These out-of-the-box features allowed DMS Division to improve integration amongst its systems and reduce maintenance expense while improving overall performance. Also, they were impressed with improvements in overall Windchill performance in the latest 8.0 release. NEC Personal Products has realized improvements in product development and most significantly, was able to manage the same workload with less required resources.

Additionally, DMS Division has been developing a complete knowledge database in Windchill compiled from individual designer experience and knowledge developed during product development projects. This project is part of NEC Personal Products' strategy to gather and store product development knowledge in a single system so that it can be leveraged in future projects, reducing the cost of product development and providing greater efficiencies.

"We have deployed Windchill to more than 200 projects so far, which includes almost every employee involved in product development," said Mr. Takashi Shibata, operating officer of NEC Personal Products. "The Windchill-based Product Development System has not only helped us increase the speed, as well as our ability to engage in new, more creative tasks, but has helped us make significant improvements in the area of risk management. Impromptu business trips by development engineers no longer have negative impact on ongoing projects as all the data is managed by Windchill."

"We are extremely pleased that the latest release of Windchill has had such a positive impact on NEC Personal Products' ability to reduce its required resources and systems expenses for product development while improving its risk management capabilities," said Chad Hawkinson, vice president, product strategy, electronics, PTC. "We look forward to helping NEC Personal Products continue to optimize its use of the PTC Product Development System in order to realize the maximum value of its investment."

This migration to the latest release was performed by a joint team of PTC Global Service professionals and an internal project team of Business Appliances DMS Division.
