UGS Helps Autodesk Customers Evolve to 3D with UGS Velocity Series

UGS Corp. announced further support for its Evolve to 3D program - a simple four-step process for evolving 2D users to 3D. New diagramming capabilities in Solid Edge® V18 software help migrating AutoCAD users develop electrical, P&ID and other diagrams using industry-standard libraries of 2D Blocks.

Solid Edge is the computer-aided design (CAD) component of the new UGS Velocity SeriesT portfolio, the first comprehensive, preconfigured portfolio of digital product design, analysis, and data management software for the PLM mid-market. UGS Velocity Series is the only PLM system in the mid-market that contains a fully integrated 2D and 3D strategy, thus removing the need for companies to maintain two separate CAD systems.

Access to Industry Standard Libraries

Solid Edge Diagramming allows users to develop electrical, P&ID and other diagrams by leveraging industry-standard libraries of 2D Blocks.

"In addition to the extensive libraries of electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and P&ID symbols delivered with Solid Edge, the program provides easy access to a rich resource of thousands of standard DWG block libraries available in the market today," said Bruce Boes, vice president of UGS Velocity Series Marketing, UGS. "Users can directly access and place AutoCAD DWG blocks from existing or new libraries into Solid Edge diagrams 'on the fly' without translation."

Companies are also able to develop their own standards. Creating and editing diagrams is made even easier through the use of intelligent connectors, lines that "snap" to specific points on a block and remain attached whenever the block is moved or the diagram is edited. Diagramming also supports multiple representations of a component. A switch, for example, can be shown in either its open or closed position without having to create two separate blocks. This ensures accuracy of any equipment lists generated from the diagram. These innovative 2D capabilities further strengthen Solid Edge's ability to create and maintain 2D drawings, an important first step in UGS' Evolve to 3D program.

Additional migration capability for Autodesk customers

Apprentice Mode featuring Command Finder helps users learn as they work by providing a cross-reference terminology search from other systems, including Autodesk Inventor® technology, to those used in Solid Edge.

AutoCAD® Emulation Environment allows users to work in the model space /paper space.

Data migration wizards for Mechanical Desktop® software and Autodesk Inventor provide seamless data transfer paths.

Direct Editing allows users to quickly and easily edit the 3D geometry, including Mechanical Desktop and Inventor, after import, even without the history tree.

AutoCAD Drawings Translation ensures that tiling, layers, colors and line styles/weights are preserved and available within drafting.
