OneSpace 2006 and Lean Product Development; Finally an Approach to PLM That Makes Sense

CoCreate Software, Inc ., announced the forthcoming release of OneSpace 2006-an innovative platform for lean product development.

Lean product development, like lean manufacturing, calls for companies to cut fat and maximize flexibility in development. For some, product lifecycle management (PLM) promised to do just that. But the PLM process proved to add just another layer of rigidity.

"PLM today is characterized by lengthy implementation cycles, high consulting fees, and complex systems that run counter to lean," says William M. Gascoigne, CoCreate CEO. "CoCreate's OneSpace 2006 product suite is the industry's 3rd generation of PLM-one that finally makes sense."

One way that the 2006 release cuts waste in PLM is by eliminating redundant tools and processes. For example, while PLM systems could manage product definition, most people prefer to use their Microsoft Office tools, like PowerPoint and Excel to gather and communicate requirements. Furthermore, most companies already have an ERP system in place. In short, PLM systems are overkill.

For the most effective and newest generation of PLM, CoCreate sees companies leveraging what they use already. Then, add a revolutionary solution that brings flexibility and efficiency to what lies between product definition and ERP: Product development.

OneSpace 2006 delivers an empowered and lean product development environment to users with:

•  A continuous build-and-check environment that cuts the stop-and-go development associated with stage-gate processes.

•  Patented Dynamic Modeling from the world's leading provider of history-free 3D. A responsive approach to late changes, so you can make modifications more often and later than otherwise possible with history-based modeling.

•  Rich model information, so information can be annotated to the model and travel with it ... saving significant time and data re-entry for later processes like purchasing and manufacturing.

•  Integrated model management that orchestrates the highly iterative processes needed in today's design environment, plus aids in the hand off of completed designs to others, like manufacturing.

•  Collaborative products that extend development to the entire distributed design team and global manufacturing partners. Now everyone can participate transparently in the process.

The suite is built on the Microsoft platform and integrated with the Office environment. It offers open, standards-based connectivity so you can seamlessly hand off designs to manufacturing.

"Organizations that embrace lean product development are responsive and extremely flexible as market conditions change," says Gascoigne. "They have the tools to iterate a design quickly and as late in the design cycle as needed to increase quality and deliver the right product on time."

The 2006 product suite is composed of innovative new releases of OneSpace Designer Drafting, OneSpace Designer Modeling, Model Manager, OneSpace.net and OneSpace Live!. OneSpace 2006 will be generally available in early 2006.

Companies using CoCreate products that already embrace the benefits of lean product development include:

•  SIGMA Corporation, which slashed time to market 30%.

•  Mirapoint, which rapidly evolves designs under time to market pressure.

•  S&S Cycle, which chopped 6 months from the new engine design process.
