BCT Technology Awarded Contract by The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences

BCT Technology has been selected to participate in the second phase of the "Product Lifecycle Management for Six Sigma Quality" project sponsored by the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS).

In the first phase, this project identified tools and processes to minimize cycle time between quality planning and manufacturing, while optimizing quality to meet Six Sigma requirements. BCT Inspector was incorporated in this phase to automatically identify critical design data and to extract that data so that it could be used in the quality assurance process. According to the NCMS report "The payback for the investment was on the order of 6 months to one year".

The Phase I project used software from Cohesia, UGS Corp.( http://www.ugs.com ), and BCT along with consulting services by Manufacturing Resources Inc. (MRI), industry participation by GE Aircraft Engines, and DoD participation by the U.S. Army, Air Force, and Navy, to analyze the complete product life cycle, including change management and repair and maintenance, of a GE F114 engine components. BCT Inspector was found to improve productivity between 70 and 80 percent over manual methods of characteristic identification and extraction for both first time parts and design changes. It was also identified that quality was improved by eliminating multiple manual data entry points and systems.

Phase II of this project has just begun. The participants of phase I are again involved in the second phase with the addition of STEP Tools, Inc. The phase II goal is to increase the seamless integration of the different tools into the OEM/supplier/maintenance depot process, as well as supporting the specific DoD requirement to provide STEP data. In this phase the quality data generated by BCT Inspector will be integrated into UGS´ TeamcenterT PLM software. This database along with corresponding neutral format drawings will be used to automatically identify and verify design changes. This capability will also be used to automatically document engineering change orders.
