UGS Speeds Linux Port of Its Digital Product Development Software with Support from AMD
UGS Corp. announced it is in the final development stages for porting NXT software, its comprehensive software solution for digital product development, to Linux® operating system on x64 technology. UGS in cooperation with AMD, a leading microprocessor developer, has provided significant support during the development process to ensure compatibility and performance.
"We are pleased with the rapid progress our development team has made on Linux," said Bob Brandenstein, director of Technology Management at UGS. "Our team has leveraged AMD OpteronT processors for performance tuning and compatibility testing as well as compiling, building and testing our NX software on Linux. Support from allies like AMD accelerates our development process so we can quickly bring our products to market and better serve our customers."
Functional benefits
Linux offers a migration path for NX UNIX® customers looking to move to the price-performance benefits available with x64-based systems. 64-bit applications running on AMD64 technology have the ability to address large amounts of memory, allowing the development of large, complex models and improving the time-to-market for design. As an added benefit, these systems are backward-compatible, allowing customers to run the latest 64-bit applications along with any existing 32-bit applications on the same machine.
"AMD 64-bit technology is a perfect fit for a high performance product such as UGS' NX digital product design software," said Pat Patla, director server/workstation marketing, Microprocessor Solutions Sector, AMD. "In addition to the large memory address space, customers can experience excellent integer and floating point performance plus benefit from increased processing power offered by AMD's dual-core technology."
UGS plans to announce NX availability on Linux by the end of 2005.
